UFC Fight for the Troops: Rani Yahya Beats Mike Brown

by Michael David SmithFormer featherweight champion Mike Brown has lost his second UFC fight in just three weeks.

Brown, who was hoping to bounce back from a split decision loss to Diego Nunes at UFC 125, instead dropped a unanimous decision to Rani Yahya at the UFC Fight for the Troops 2. Brown is now on a two-fight losing streak and has dropped four of his last six, and it's fair to wonder how much the former champ has left.

Yahya snapped a two-fight losing streak of his own and looked good in the process. He'll be a fighter to keep an eye on in the UFC's new featherweight division.

"It was a very tough fight," Yahya said afterward. "Mike is a winner, he's a warrior. He's a 35-year-old warrior that took a fight on two-week's notice and fought at the last UFC, so he should get credit for that."

Jacare Souza Submits Robbie Lawler to Retain Strikeforce Belt

by Michael David SmithStrikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza used a Brazilian jiu jitsu clinic in the second and third rounds of his title fight with Robbie Lawler Saturday night at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg, dominating the positional game in the second round and forcing Lawler to tap to a rear-naked choke in the third.

The victory was the most impressive of Jacare's MMA career, a fight in which he came back from getting badly hurt in the first round to completely control the second and third.

"My English is so bad -- I'm so sorry everybody," the Brazilian Jacare told the crowd, before adding, "I came prepared for everything."

Crossroads Day Two / Best-Trick Contest

Day two of Crossroads almost seemed like more of a contest day than a day to show off the new product that is coming out. The contest was held at the new Zero park on the the stairs and the hubba, but the catch was there was a fence at the end of the stairs that connected to the hubba. The shredding was going off all day.

Rashad Evans turns to The Force to train for his bout with 'Shogun'

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has plenty of weapons to use against Rashad Evans, so "Suga" had to get creative when training for their March title bout. He had to turn to Jedi powers.

With his own Yoda, Greg Jackson, looking on, the padawan hones his mind-control skills. Jedi Knight will pay off, as the ability to sense danger, control minds and drain life force could come in handy against Shogun. Now, if only light sabers were allowed in the Octagon...

'Jacare' Souza keeps belt with win over Lawler at Strikeforce

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza defended his Strikeforce middleweight championship belt using the world-class jiu-jitsu he is known for, submitting Robbie Lawler with a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Jacare took Lawler down early in the first round, but when he switched to a guillotine, Lawler was able to get back to his feet. From there, violent stand-up erupted with Lawler throwing big strikes. He used a knee and a combination of punches to knock him to the ground. For some reason, Lawler followed Jacare to the ground, and was controlled on the ground until they were stood up with just 0:25 left in the round. Lawler finished the round strong, throwing strikes until Jacare tried for another takedown.

In the second round, Jacare controlled Lawler on the ground. He punished Lawler with strikes and tried for several submission attempts, but Lawler showed evolution in his fight game, working out of each and every submission attempt with one of MMA's best grapplers.

That submission defense magic disappeared in the third round, as Jacare took Lawler down early. He took his back, slapped on a body triangle and then slipped in a rear naked choke. Lawler tapped at 2:00 in the third.

The difference in this fight was takedown defense. Though Lawler is now training in Arizona with former All-American wrestlers Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway, he couldn't stop four of Jacare's six takedown attempts.

Souza is undefeated with Strikeforce after fighting for Dream and Brazilian-based promotions, earning a record of 14-2. Lawler, who just signed a new contract with Strikeforce, is 18-7.

Aldo's next! Hominick destroys Roop to lock in his title shot

Jose Aldo finally has an opponent. Mark Hominick was offered the chance to take on the UFC's featherweight champ if he could win tonight at Fight for the Troops 2. Josh Grispi had the same opportunity at UFC 125, but blew it with a loss to Dustin Poirier. Hominick learned the lesson and delivered big time by smoking George Roop in less than two minutes. The Canadian scored a TKO finish at 1:28 of the first round to make his title shot official.

"If you're next in line for a title shot you got go out there and prove it," Hominick told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I believe my standup is far superior to everybody in the featherweight division, but you have to show it. You have to prove it in the cage."

Whether he's the best striker up for debate, but there is no argument that he is incredibly composed on the feet. The much taller Roop tried to stay on the move and catch Hominick off guard by throwing kicks, punches and knees from odd angles.

Hominick calmly stalked Roop and picked his spot. After Roop threw a lazy jab, Hominick floored him with a straight just 36 seconds into the fight. Instead of jumping into Roop's guard, Hominick backed up and waved for the fallen fighter to get up.

Roop never seemed right the rest of the fight. He also fell into a bad habit by constantly moving to his left. With 3:54 remaining, Hominick nailed Roop with a left hook and eight seconds later he stunned him with a straight right. Roops was out of it and got caught with another big left hook. Down he went and with Roop's hands at his sides, Hominick nailed him one more time. Referee Don Turnage jumped in to stop the fight. Roop protested, but when he rose to his feet he stumbled across the Octagon.

Hominick's been rumored to face Aldo at UFC 129 in Toronto.

"Jose’s next. I think he’s the best pound for pound, but he’s never faced anyone like me," Hominick said. "I'm going to go out there and prove it."

The UFC is set to debut in Ontario in April. Hominicks' hometown is 100 miles to the south of Toronto.

Strikeforce 'Diaz vs. Cyborg' picks, Vegas-style

Strikeforce is opening 2011 with a bang tonight in San Jose. The card highlighted by two title fights, also has Herschel Walker in his second MMA fight. The odds are huge for three of the four big fights. Welterweight champ Nick Diaz is a massive favorite over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. The same goes for the inexperienced Walker. At minus-340, that's quite the leap of faith by the public and the sportsbooks.

Roger Gracie is the smallest favorite at minus-150 over Trevor Prangley. The South African has an interesting challenge in front of him. He's giving away a lot of size against the 6-foot-4 jiu-jitsu ace. Gracie is the much better grappler. Once it gets to the ground, Prangley is in trouble. He's a powerful guy and savvy on the ground, but he won't be able to use his strength to muscle out of submission attempts.

Robbie Lawler is a big underdog against Strikeforce middleweight champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Jacare's jiu-jitsu pedigree is sick, but he's learning how to fight on the feet. Lawler has been a monster at middleweight. His takedown defense has always been solid. He's got a good shot at stealing some dog money at plus-210, with the power he's got in both hands.

The crew at Bloody Elbow made their picks straight up. Diaz swept the board while Jacare got the nod from 6-of-8 writers. Walker was picked by all eight, and according to BE, Prangley looks like a live dog. Five of the guys picked Prangley to take out the 2-0 Gracie. Luke Thomas was very down on Gracie:

I am not a believer in Roger Gracie. It's obviously amazing he can tap 7 world-class black belts in a row in grappling tournaments with a cross choke from the mount, but MMA is another story. He's got virtually no striking and virtually no wrestling. Prangley's got a little more of each. If the fight hits the third round, things get dicey, but I like Prangley to upset.

Strikeforce betting odds (Las Vegas Hilton):
Official plays in bold

Nick Diaz (-340) vs. Evangelista Santos (+280) - Welterweight title
Robbie Lawler (+210) vs. Ronaldo Souza (-250) - Middleweight title
Scott Carson (+280) vs. Herschel Walker (-340) - Heavyweight
Trevor Prangley (+130) vs. Roger Gracie (-150) - Light heavyweight

Fedor Emelianenko training on a horse for Feb. 12 bout

Oh, why hello, there. I am Fedor Emelianenko, the greatest fighter in the world. It's so nice to meet you. Wait, what did you just say? Fabricio Wer-who?

That's funny. You ... you, my friend, are funny. I did lose to Werdum. It is true. But did you hear about the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix?

I was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard about. The chance to fight Fabricio again? Or Alistair Overeem? Yes, that made me think.

I have to win that grand prix.

I'm going to show who the best heavyweight in the world is, even if it means I have to spar in a Stalin-era pool hall. (No, wait. Why am I here? I'm the greatest fighter in the world, and I'm training at a place where any Sergei Schmo can come in off the street to play nine-ball?)

I'll do it for you, my friend. I'll do it for you, and of course, to impress the ladies.

You'll see on Feb. 12, my friend.

N.Y. Post video report: 'How can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?'

The UFC's big press conference at Madison Square Garden unveiled a nice show of support. Scott O'Neil, President of Madison Square Garden Sports, is squarely behind the effort as was N.Y. assemblyman Dean Murray. There was little opposition in the room. As a result, no debate ensued.

There was one interesting moment when Megan Paznik asked this:

"If you're adding kicking and punching to mixed martial arts, how can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?"

Dana White was so thrown off he had a tough time answering the question. He turned to referencing the fact that there hasn't been a death in the history of the UFC. The easiest approach would've been to mention that boxing, football and hockey are all contact sports to a certain degree and there really is no way to guarantee a sport is free of injuries. It's also worth noting that elements of MMA like Judo, karate, boxing, jiu-jitsu and wrestling are all legal in New York. Why would a combination of those disciplines be illegal?

Paznik went on to voice this video. Yes, there is a dogfighting comparison and the producer of the video made sure to include plenty of violent looking images.

Honda Motor Co. just released its sales figures for motorcycles in 2010, and surprisingly the Japanese company has done very well during an otherwise dismal year for the motorcycle industry. Hominick fighting for title shot, Roop isn't; Is that fair?

Mark Hominick is just over a day away from the second biggest fight of his life. If he downs George Roop at Fight for the Troops 2, Hominick gets a shot at the biggest fight of his career, a title shot against Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champ. Roop's situation is different. Even with a win, there is no title shot. Essentially this is just another fight ... for now.

MMA fans have grown accustomed to title eliminators, so why switch the approach? Roop is the guy who could be complaining, but he's not. He understands the reality of the 145-pound division.

"I don't take it too much as disrespect," Roop told MMAjunkie radio. "I understand he's the No. 1 contender, and if he can get past me – (and that's) a big 'can' with a question mark on it – I do think he deserves it."

Hominick, 28, has been long regarded as a possible title contender. His striking is top notch and he's shored up most of his weaknesses on the ground. The Canadian has won four straight, but you could make the argument that Roop's recent opponents have actually been more impressive that the guy line for a title shot.

"But if you look at the caliber of fighters I've been fighting – (former champ) Eddie Wineland, (Leonard) Garcia on a week-and-a-half's notice, and Chan Sung Jung, who (supposedly) couldn't be knocked out – I fought top-caliber guys, and I step up and take fights."

Roop knows he can't talk himself into a title shot before the fight, but he does control his own destiny tomorrow night. A devastating win on Spike TV may force the promotion's hand. If offered Aldo, he won't shy away from the fight.

"It's a big deal, and I think Mark deserves it if he gets past me. But that's a big if," Roop said. "I don't plan on losing this fight. It'd be nice for me to fight Jose Aldo, as well. We'll see how Jan. 22 plays out."

This is actually a return to the UFC for Hominick (19-8). A relatively small 145 pounder, he actually fought twice for the promotion as a lightweight back in 2006. He went 2-0 against Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards.

Roop has an example to follow. Josh Grispi was the last guy fighting for his shot at Aldo. The 23-year-old was beaten soundly by Dustin Poirier at UFC 125. He's also accustomed to being the underdog. Roop knocked off Internet sensation and T-shirt maven, Chan Sung Jung, "The Korean Zombie" in his last fight.

Offering to bring two fights a year to N.Y., UFC gets strong support

The economy sucks everywhere. Governmental budgets are being slashed as everyone looks to tighten their belts. New York is no different. The Empire State is looking for new revenue streams, yet its still holding on to the silly view that mixed martial arts is beyond regulation and licensing.

Dean Murray, a N.Y. State Assemblyman, was one of several high ranking officials to attend yesterday's UFC Madison Square Garden press conference/MMA rally.

"The fact of the matter is, this another example of New York being a nanny state. We have to stop doing that. We have to give the choice," Murray during the presser (12:12 mark). "How many TV stations do you have? How many radio stations do you have? You have choices. By us not legalizing this, it's removing that option of all these, literally millions of fans in New York state, having a chance to see their hometown heroes fighting."

Dana White spoke about the impact of bringing two or three UFC events each year to New York.

"The financial study [that HR&A did] is incredibly conservative. In that study we priced tickets cheaper than New Jersey, and we bring a lot of money into that state. We also conservatively projected only two events -- one big PPV at Madison Square Garden, and one upstate, which would be a fight night or a finale or something like that." White told ESPN.com. "But who knows -- maybe we come into New York and we do three events, and you triple whatever that number is. It's absolutely insane and asinine for this not to be sanctioned."

The UFC president pointed out that he's not just fighting for his promotion to land in New York.

"When we're talking about the UFC coming to the state of New York, a lot of other mixed martial arts events will too. Which will create even more revenue. You're going to have all these other organizations that will come here and bring more money in and create more jobs," said White.

Scott O'Neil, the President of Madison Square Garden Sports, said he's a big fan of  MMA and gave a glowing report (2:45 mark) after watching UFC 111 in nearby Newark, N.J.

Jamie Springer of HR&A Advisors estimated that MMA would bring a $23 million impact to New York. The estimates were based on two UFC events each year in New York that would generate $16 million. An additional $7 million would come from 70 more MMA events each year in N.Y. Springer based that estimate on the number of fight cards in states like New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania.

Face-off! The best staredown techniques in MMA

Two randomly, great staredowns took place at the weigh-ins for the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2. Fighters use several different techniques to gain an edge during weigh-ins.

The La-La-La I can't see you technique: Anderson Silva (above left) used this before his bout with Chael Sonnen in response to the many unsavory things that Sonnen said about Silva before the bout. It worked for Silva, as he won in the final minutes of the title match with Sonnen. Cheick Kongo tried it against Frank Mir, but it didn't work as well.

The sharing-is-caring method: At FFTT 2 weigh-ins, Yves Edwards was hungry. After all, he had just cut down to 155 pounds. He snacked on some potato chips, and was kind enough to share a chip with his opponent, Cody McKenzie. That streak of kindness helped Edwards, who won with a rear-naked choke. This technique was also employed at UFC 94 by Akihiro Gono, who shared his extra-large wig with Jon Fitch, but it didn't turn out so well for Gono. He lost in a decision.

The finger-in-the-face gambit: Ah, Nick Diaz. Don't ever stop being you. At a press conference before his bout with Frank Shamrock, Diaz gave the Stockton Heybuddy to his opponent. Though Shamrock laughed it off, Diaz did win in a second-round TKO.

The Two-Thumbs-Up: Damarques Johnson and Mike Guymon's face-off resembled something from this site, but also notched a zero on the intimidation scale. Perhaps that was part of Johnson's plan, as he won with a body triangle at Fight for the Troops 2.

The Glory Days: At UFC 123, old friends Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson paid tribute to their roots by facing off as they did when wrestling in college. Simpson told Cagewriter that they had planned on wearing their college singlets, but Munoz couldn't find his. Munoz won the decision, but this technique wasn't really about intimidation.

Orange County Choppers Facing Foreclosure

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, only have basic cable, and don’t frequent moustache competitions, you’ve likely heard of Orange County Choppers, American Chopper, and the Teutul family. Originally started by father (Paul Sr.) and son (Paul Jr.), the small theme bike builders of Orange County Choppers came to fame when The Discovery Channel (later moved to The Learning Channel) picked them up for its hit show American Chopper. Usually centering around a bike ...

What fighters go through for your entertainment

At the beginning of each UFC pay-per-view, the UFC plays an opening video that likens the UFC to gladiators, like this one from UFC 124:

But how much do today's fighters have to do with the gladiators of ancient Rome? Quite a bit, it turns out. Like Maximus, they put their bodies through hell so that you'll be entertained, but they don't give much thought to the future. In a column from MMA Fighting, Strikeforce fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller recognizes the risks, but says it doesn't change anything.

"Athletes know this stuff. We do," said Miller. "We're not dumb. It's like that new research that links head injuries and Lou Gehrig's disease. Well, duh, science. Thanks for telling us what athletes already know. We know what we're doing to ourselves. It's the elephant in the room. We're giving our bodies for the entertainment of the masses. I'm okay with that. I've had plenty of surgeries. I know there's a chance that I could be retarded. I know that."

MMA is far from the only sport where athletes take these risks. Football players take on massive amounts of punishment, as do boxers and hockey players. But it's worth reading the entire article to hear how fighters we know and love have paid the price.

Fight for the Troops 2 picks, Vegas-style

For a card with plenty of toss-up fights, Ultimate Fight Night 23 has some pretty big numbers on the betting board. Remember the odds are set to balance the public's opinion on the fights. The public is a little shaky on its perception of some these battles. Let's see if we can find some underdog value.

Melvin Guillard (26-8, 9-4 UFC) looks like a new fighter since his move to Albuquerque to work with fight guru Greg Jackson. Jackson has moved Guillard away from his reckless ways of the past. He's a more composed fighter now. Is that enough to steal plus-200? Dunham is aggressive, well-rounded and dangerous from his back. That could be the issue for Guillard, who has fallen victim to submission in all four of his UFC losses.

Matt Mitrione (3-0, 3-0 UFC) enters his fight against big Tim Hague at a UFC career-high 260 pounds. He did look bigger across the shoulders, but does the extra weight mean he's less conditioned? Should Mitrione, with just three pro fights under his belt, be a minus-260 favorite against any experienced MMA heavyweight? This looks shaky. We're not laying that kind of number on a guy who's career wins have come against Kimbo Slice, Marcus Jones and Joey Beltran. There's solid value with Hague.

The same goes for Beltran against Pat Barry. Barry says he more focused for this one, but does he have the intensity and gas tank to finish the fight? Barry is still carrying a little extra weight at 240 up from 233. It makes Beltran worth a play at plus-190.

Yves Edwards is an intriguing favorite. The price is big at minus-270, but Cody McKenzie (12-0, 1-0 UFC) only has one path to victory, the guillotine choke. His wrestling and striking is below par. Edwards (39-16, 7-4 UFC) has suffered some losses over the last 10 years, but only one via submission.

Fight for the Troops 2 betting odds (Courtesy Lagasse Stadium):

UFC Sues Justin.tv, Says 50,000 People Viewed UFC 121 Illegally

by Michael David SmithThe UFC is using its status as the industry leader in pay-per-view television to also become the leader in cracking down on companies that allow people to watch pay-per-view events online, without paying.

Zuffa, the UFC's parent company, announced Friday that it filed a lawsuit against Justin.tv, for what it calls "Justin.tv's repeated and ongoing failure to meaningfully address the rampant and illegal uploading of video of live Pay-Per-View UFC events by members and users of the Justin.tv website.

Justin.tv (which did not immediately respond to a request for comment) calls itself "the easiest way to create live video and show anyone in the world." The site says that it respects copyright law and bans users who violate it.

Barry, tired of 'Cro Cop' criticism, wants to crush Beltran

There's nothing nasty about Pat Barry outside the cage. Inside the Octagon can sometimes be a different story. If he's focused, Barry can be one of the most devastating strikers in the heavyweight division. That's a big if.

Too often, Barry's pleasant disposition follows him into his fights. The stocky kickboxer says there will be no loss of focus this weekend against Joey Beltran at the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2.

"This is a feeling I haven’t had in a long time," Barry told Sherdog. "Back in my kickboxing days, I used to have these every once in a while. Just an angry, want to break something, upset at something. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it is that’s giving me this feeling, this sensation, but I’m very annoyed. Like I’m extremely annoyed and I feel like I’ve got to break something."

He wasn't "annoyed" enough back in June during his last fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and it cost Barry dearly.

Barry spoke often before the UFC 115 fight about what an honor it was to fight his idol. He was so pleasant it even got the normally stoic, business-like Cro Cop to lighten up.

When the fight hit the cage, the gap between the fighters was obvious. Cro Cop is a worn down 36-year-old while Barry, 31, has a lot of fight left in him. The American mauled Cro Cop early in the fight, but starting screwing around and turned things into a sparring session. Cro Cop went into survival mode and submitted a tired Barry. Since the upset loss, the talk of Barry's lack of killer instinct has been incessant.

"I’m still hearing about that, I’m still hearing people," Barry said. "My mother’s hearing this kind of [expletive]. People are approaching my mother and making these comments to her. It’s still going on now."

On the surface, Beltran appears to be a good matchup for Barry. He's a smallish heavyweight who likes to stand and bang, but he can also take a beating and has enough wrestling in his arsenal to pose a major threat to Barry if he doesn't take of business early.

Exclusive pictures from UFC's Fight for the Troops 2

Check out our exclusive pictures by Tracy Lee from Fight for the Troops 2.

See all the action from the preliminary cards as well as Matt Mitrione showing off his vertical leap and knocking down Tim Hague with one big left hand. Also check out Mark Hominick working overtime with some Octagon pushups.

Tracy captured the scenery of Fort Hood with shots of an Apache helicopter, the venue, Chuck Liddell greeting the soldiers and the presenting of the colors.

There's also some great shots of the Octagon girls -- Chandella, Brittney and Arianny -- in their camoflage numbers.

UFC still committed to bringing MMA to New York

UFC president Dana White and chairman Lorenzo Fertitta met with the press in New York City to make their commitment to the Big Apple clear. They announced via an online press conference that once MMA is regulated, the UFC will bring two shows to Madison Square Garden. According to studies from an independent researcher, those two shows would bring $23 million and more than 200 jobs to N.Y.

"By bringing UFC events to New York, the state will see a positive financial impact," White said. "The arenas will get to host major UFC events and local hotels, restaurants, and other businesses will attract new customers. They’ll look forward to the times we bring UFC to New York."

N.Y. assemblyman Dean Murray was on hand to talk politics, and the process that had to happen to get MMA legalized and sanctioned in his state. He will try to sway newly sworn-in governor Andrew Cuomo to include revenue from MMA in the state budget, which will give it an easier path. He is pushing for MMA's legalization because he wants the state to find new economic streams.

"In today's climate, we don't need to be raising taxes. We need a chance to raise revenue," Murray said.

But one thing was clear throughout the press conference -- the UFC's biggest hurdle in getting MMA in the Empire State was not effective lobbying or discussions of economic impact. It's the need for education.

White emphasized the process of education several times throughout the half-hour press conference, and then a reporter on-hand showed just why education about of MMA was needed, asking, "How will you regulate martial arts when you add in kicks and punches?"

White calmly pointed out that kicks and punches are part of MMA, one of the few sports regulated by the government, and that safety is always the first concern.

In Poll of Favorite Sports, MMA Is Overlooked

by Michael David SmithThe polling firm Harris Interactive regularly surveys Americans to find out their favorite sports, and the results of this year's poll are in. Check out the results and you'll see about what you'd expect: Pro football is clearly America's most popular sport, baseball is next, then college football, auto racing, basketball and hockey.

What you won't see anywhere is mixed martial arts.

The reason? MMA wasn't even one of the choices Harris Interactive gave to poll respondents.
