The UFC and roids: Dana White says he's not the boss, the government is

Dana White finally got to vent about Chael Sonnen's positive drug test and one-year suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission. He's not happy with the criticism lobbed his way. Some fans and MMA bloggers think it's time for White to put his foot down about steroids in the sport. White said he's not the guy who makes the decisions, it's the state commissions.

"The commission could give a flying rat's ass about what I think," White told the media gathered at the UFC 119 prefight presser. "They oversee me! They tell me what I'm going to do."

White said stop comparing him to guys like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA commissioner David Stern.

"People say you're the commissioner of the sport. Here's the reality, the government tells my fighters what's going to happen to them," said White. "The big misconception that Dana White runs the athletic commissions couldn't be further from the truth so I have to sit back now and see what happens with Chael Sonnen."

White told Ariel Helwani of mmafighting.com that there's a lot more to the Sonnen story and that we all need to wait until the appeal is heard by the California State Athletic Commission. But he did state that Sonnen has always been a standup guy and reiterated what he told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole last week. White said various commission's penalties are severe enough. White doesn't want to pile on fighters who violate drug rules. But he did take time to point out the difference between violators like Chael Sonnen and former UFC heavyweight champ Josh Barnett.

"People are all going to make mistakes. I judge you by how you react to the mistakes you make," said White. "There's guys out there like Josh Barnett. Josh Barnett tested positive three times and this guy denies it every time. Everybody's a liar but him. I just saw an interview he did where he said he could really give a [expletive] about anybody else but himself. And that's why Josh Barnett isn't and will never be in the UFC. This isn't the kind of guy that I respect or want to do business with."

Barnett recently signed a deal with Strikeforce. He tested positive in 2002 after UFC 36 and was stripped of his title. He also tested positive in 2009 before a scheduled fight for Affliction against Fedor Emelianenko.

Dollaway scores impressive choke win over Doerksen at UFC 119

Joe Doerksen knows submissions so C.B. Dollaway was going to be cautious in his UFC 119 fight on Spike. But Dolloway isn't half bad with his sub game either. Doerksen got a little sloppy during some action along the cage and left his head exposed. Dollaway latched on an arm-in choke and dropped to his back. But it wasn't over just yet. Dollaway showed patience and eventually let the arm go and locked on a guilltoine choke that Doerksen couldn't survive. Dollaway got his sixth UFC win at 2:13 of the first round.

"I can't believe I even got that," said Dollaway, who was all smiles with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Joe has 33 submissions out of 46 wins. I was worried about his submission game and then I pulled off a guillotine in the first round."

Patience was a key for Dollaway (11-2, 5-2 UFC). He locked on the initial choke with 4:20 left in the round. Once on his back, the Season 7 "Ultimate Fighter" runnerup, didn't squeeze like a maniac. He kept the hold and waited for Doerksen to make a move.

"I didn't want to wear my arms out. A lot of times guys will wear theirs arms out going for it," said Dollaway.

Just over a minute later, Doerksen (46-13-1, 2-6 UFC) tried to pass and the scramble got to the feet for a few seconds. That's when Dollaway let go of Doerksen's arm and applied a guillotine. The fighters rolled on the mat several times but Dollaway held on and Doerksen couldn't hold out any longer.

"I had the guillotine locked on and I was just kind of hanging out, waiting to get the hook in. I was patient and I was able to hook the leg and end it. I can't believe I caught that," said Dollaway.

“I thought this fight was going to be a three-round war, but I’m very happy to get the win like I did. I planned on standing and trading with him because he’s very good on the ground."

The loss snapped a seven-win fight streak for Doerksen. This was his fourth fight in the last five months.

Does Belfort deserve a UFC title shot?

The UFC is pretty good at listening to its fans when it comes to matchmaking. With the bad news of the Chael Sonnen positive drug test, the promotion needed to do something that would satisfy pay-per-view buyers of the next Anderson Silva fight. Dana White made a bold move by pulling Vitor Belfort from UFC 122 and giving him the next match against the UFC's middleweight champ.

Belfort (19-8, 8-4 UFC) is 0-0 in the UFC's middleweight division. By the time the fight arrives, he'll have just one fight under his belt over the last two years.

Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole finds that troubling and is worried that Belfort may not even be able to make the 185-pound limit.

He has a point. Is there one single fighter in the UFC who could debut in a new weight class and get a title shot? There was probably only one outside promotion who could've gotten a debut title shot. That was Fedor Emelianenko had his win streak remained intact and had he left Strikeforce.

Iron Mike? Iron Mike: What you need to know from TUF Episode 3

"The Ultimate Fighter" moved to a third episode, where Team Koscheck tried to recover from losing the first fight, and Georges St. Pierre brought in a few special coaches to motivate his team.

-- Josh Koscheck was not pleased with the focus of his team. He ripped them halfway through their training session and lit a fire under them.

-- Georges St. Pierre brought in 1996 Canadian Olympic silver medalist Gia Sissaouri to work with the team. He brought in another champion, some guy by the name of Mike Tyson.

Dana White called Tyson to come in for a fight by GSP's request, and Iron Mike was seriously geeked to come to one of the TUF fights. This man, who has been part of some of the biggest boxing events of all time, was overjoyed about watching exhibition bouts. GSP was equally geeked, telling Tyson how he loved him in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Really, GSP? The video game was the best you can do?

Fight of the week: Michael Johnson vs. Aaron Wilkinson

With Tyson watching, Wilkinson surprised Johnson, GSP's No. 1 pick, by withstanding a bevy of strikes, and followed up with a takedown and ground and pound in the first round.

On Tyson's scorecard, Wilkinson won the round.

Johnson started the second round strong, with a takedown and crisp striking, but Wilkinson was able to get a takedown. Koscheck called Wilkinson "English" while begging for a takedown. I wonder if that's a not-so-witty nickname for the British fighter, or if Kos just forgot his name. Johnson controlled the rest of the round in the clinch, winning the round. That means only one thing: We're going to a third round.

Johnson started round three with an immediate takedown and ground and pound. He then takes Wilkinson's back, sinks in a rear naked choke, and taps him out.

With that win, GSP is 2-0.

Quotes of the week:

"Undestirating my skills" -- Bruce LeRoy, in response to Jason Lentz, the opponent he beat

"It's not my first rodeo" -- Georges St. Pierre, after Koscheck and his coaches parked their cars so that GSP couldn't open his car door.

"He beat a little confidence out of him". -- Tyson, about Michael Johnson

"Ya gotta come out, Mike. No more playin' Mike." -- Tyson

"I thought that, um, the English guy, had very good boxing."-- Tyson

Better weekend suplex: 'Sexyata' or Barnett?

One was real. One was fake. But they both looked pretty cool. Josh Barnett took on Tim Sylvia in a pro wrestling match in Japan. "The Baby-Faced Assassin" tossed Sylvia on his noggin. It probably came with a little assistance from Sylvia. Kazuyuki Miyata did it for real.  "Sexyata" took "Lion" Takeshi for two rides during their fight at DREAM 16. One more time and it would've brought back memories of wrestler Chris Benoit, who once did it 10 times to "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Any Benoit memories beyond that are pretty lousy.

Matt Serra looking forward to a great fight, then ravioli

INDIANAPOLIS -- Matt Serra isn't dumb. He knows that when he walks into Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday night at UFC 119, he will likely be welcomed by boos, or at least silence. Since he is facing Indianapolis's native son, Chris Lytle, he does not expect anyone a big cheerin section.

"Am I prepared for the boos? Yeah. Did you see my fight in Montreal?" Serra said with a laugh at the UFC 119 press conference. "You've gotta be a good sport. This is Chris's hometown. We're both professionals. It may not resemble that, because it is a combat sport, but I'm sure, no matter what goes down, we'll be buddies afterward."

"If we fought in New York, he's such a nice guy, they'd probably boo me there, too. It's a funny thing. It's all part of the game. He's the hometown guy. I'm prepared for it. I'll still be smiling."

Serra will face Chris Lytle, a good friend of his since the two of them were on "The Ultimate Fighter." He was excited to take on the rematch because of the potential for the fight.

"What really got me excited about this fight is, since we had that fight, Chris has been insane. He has the most bonuses. I think he's got the record for that. The guy went on a tear. You're not going to find a bigger Chis Lytle fan than this guy right here. You want an exciting fighter. I don't even look at it as fighting him again. It's like fighting him the first time."

Though Serra hasn't talked any trash going into the bout, that doesn't mean he will be any less tenacious on Saturday.

"We're both going to look to take each other out. It's funny. My last two [opponents], I wasn't really crazy about. Me and Chris get along great. We were buddies on the show. I don't think you're going to see that in the cage. We'll try to take each other's heads off. But afterwards, I'm sure we'll have a Bud Light."

Serra was awarded with the Tequila Cazadores Spirit Award for UFC 119 for his work with the Ronald McDonald House, and $1,000 was donated to RMCH in his name. He said he has visited the RMCH on Long Island and was impressed by one of their patients.

"This kid Anthony was really in bad shape, I visited him in Long Island and now he's on the up. I still keep in touch with him. I like what they do. They're all about the children. That's an awesome thing."

Serra's wife's Italian cooking has been his Achilles heel. He cuts down on the Italian food before fights, but says that there's a feast waiting for him when he gets back to his home and gym

"Eggplant rolitini, homemade pizza on the BBQ, raviolis. It's going to be bad. The only bad thing about it is that my stomach shrinks. Because of dieting, I get sick, but I'm looking forward to it."

But before the big meal, he will and Lytle have work to do.

"Good thing he's a fireman -- this is going to be cheesy -- because we're going to light this place on fire," Serra said with a thumbs up.

Matt Mitrione talks football, family and Joey Beltran

INDIANAPOLIS -- Matt Mitrione is just getting started in his MMA career, but the heavyweight is already on a card in front of fans and friends in Indianapolis. Just a few days before his fight with Joey Beltran, Mitrione met with fans (and Cagewriter) at a Buffalo Wild Wings two blocks from Conseco Fieldhouse, the arena for UFC 119.

"I feel better than I've ever felt. Phenomenal," Mitrione said. "I think old man strength is starting to set in."

At 32, he is 2-0 in the UFC and in his MMA career. Mitrione was a castmember of the tenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," where he and two other former football players learned about MMA from the Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

As a former football player, Mitrione is aware of some of the recent findings about football players and brain damage. Former Cincinnati Bengal Chris Henry died a strange death, and a University of Pennsylvania football player committed suicide. Both were later found to have chronic traumatic encephelopathy, a type of brain damage.

Mitrione said that after playing at Purdue University and for one year in the NFL, he still feels the effects from the repetitive hits of being a defensive tackle.

"I guarantee you I have brain damage. I don't think as clearly as I used to, and I'm not as quick-witted as I used to be. Sometimes, my words run together," he said. "My short-term memory isn't great. I don't get headaches, but I know that the damage from football is done."

The father of two boys (and another child due in November) and a huge fan of the sport said that he won't let his sons play football, but he would let them try MMA.

"I don't take a whole lot of damage as a fighter, but it happened in football."

Though he is fighting in his adopted hometown of Indianapolis, his wife will not be in attendance.

"When you're a fighter, you know that there is a possibility that you get your [profane] kicked. I don't mind that, but if my wife is there, she's going to get upset. She's going to hear people cheer and boo me, and she won't be able to change the channel. If I'm getting my [profane] kicked and she's there, I'm going to be more worried about her than focusing on the fight, and getting myself out of that situation."

To get ready for this fight, Mitrione continued to try to learn MMA, a sport he is new to but has so much talent in. He worked with Purdue assistant wrestling coach Tom Erickson and spent time at Roufus Sport. He asked the UFC for a fighter who will give him a challenge, and will fight Beltran on the televised undercard on Spike.

"Joey has good heart, and tries hard. I think he's got a good chin and good power, but it's so subjective. I think I've got great power and a great chin, too. But I'm in the best shape of my life, and I will be game for it."

Dream 16: Gegard Mousasi Submits Tatsuya Mizuno

by Michael David SmithGegard Mousasi is the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion and former Dream middleweight champion, and now he's the current Dream light heavyweight champion, beating Tatsuya Mizuno at Dream 16 to win his second title in Japan's top MMA promotion.

The fight was widely regarded as a mismatch, and for the most part it was. Although Mizuno held his own on the ground at times, it was a relatively one-sided fight that lasted just over six minutes. Mousasi finished the fight with a rear-naked choke that caused Mizuno to tap out very quickly.

In April, Mousasi lost badly to Muhammad "King Mo" Lawal, and he still has plenty of work to do on his wrestling before he can be considered one of the truly elite light heavyweights in MMA. But he showed on Saturday that he is the best in Dream.

Zhang Tie Quan Ready to Show How a Chinese Athlete Can Fight

by Michael David Smith

One of the biggest fights of the year in mixed martial arts takes place on Thursday night when Jose Aldo fights Manny Gamburyan for the featherweight champion of the world. But the fight that could be the most significant bout of the year will happen a few hours earlier on the same World Extreme Cagefighting card, and it will be largely overlooked and maybe not even shown on the television broadcast.

That fight features China's Zhang Tie Quan stepping into the cage to take on an American named Pablo Garza, and it represents a major opportunity for American MMA to break into the Chinese market.

Every American company is intrigued by the possibilities of expanding into China, and Zuffa (parent company of the WEC and UFC) is no different. And while it's not realistic to think Zhang could do for MMA what Yao Ming did for basketball, Zhang knows that if he succeeds on the American stage, he could have a huge impact on the growth of the sport in the world's most populous nation.

Sherk takes controversial decision for win at UFC 119

It was a big step up the UFC lightweight ladder for Evan Dunham. He slipped off a few rungs along the way but it looked like he'd done enough to pass Sean Sherk with a big win. But the two of the three judges didn't see it that way. Dunham closed the final two minutes of the fight in very strong fashion. The crowd was amped and ready to cheer a Dunham win but Sherk was given a split decision victory, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, at UFC 119 in Indianapolis.

Sherk (34-4-1, 8-4 UFC) went back to his bread and butter wrestling game. He worked for takedowns throughout the first and second round. He scored four of them but was also in several submission predicaments. A gracious Dunham (11-1) questioned his execution.

"Coming into this fight it was my goal not to go for those just cause I know he's a really tough guy. I've seen lots of guys threaten that and never finish," Dunham told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I think I made a mistake by even going for them. I think I should've just tried to just stuff the shots a little more. I think I could've done better in that first round. It is what it is and I'll improve."

Sherk was able to steal the first round when he ripped open a nasty cut over Dunham's right eye with 44 seconds left. The blood poured from Dunham's head all over his chest and the mat. It had to leave a big impression on the judges.

But it didn't deter Dunham who kept coming at Sherk the rest of the way. The fight seemed to turn in the middle of the second. Dunham's length was a huge advantage against the 5-foot-6 Sherk. He landed three-punch combinations, kicks and a few big knees. At the end of the second, the 37-year-old Sherk appeared to be tiring. A rarity for a guy who's got a reputation as a cardio machine.

It got worse for him in the third round. Sherk was dropped to a knee after absorbing a nasty head kick at the start of the round. In the final two minutes, Sherk had the snot beaten out him. He absorbed combos and some more knees.

Two judges thought Sherk did enough to win. Kelvin Caldwell had it 29-28 for Dunham while veteran judges Cecil Peoples and Glenn Trowbridge each scored it 29-28 for Sherk. The guess here is that Peoples will be a punching bag this week on MMA message boards. He's been on the wrong side of a few controversial decisions.

Lytle looking to put on a show for the hometown crowd

INDIANAPOLIS -- This Saturday, Chris Lytle will go to work in front of a home crowd for the first time in years. He plans to put on a show for the fans at Conseco Fieldhouse, but he is still focused on one thing: beating Matt Serra.

"I've got a job to do. Just go out and fight. Finish a fight. That's what I'm thinking about right now," Lytle said at the UFC 119 open workouts.

Serra walked into the workouts as Lytle was walking out. The two friends, who will be opponents in the Octagon on Wednesday, embraced and said hello. He lost his last fight with Serra in a split decision, but said he has grown as a fighter since that bout in late 2006.

"Before, for the last fight, my mentality was, I just want to win at all costs, and I don't care. I treated it too much as a competition, and I didn't go out there to fight. I just tried to compete in the sport. I don't like when people do that. The fights aren't as good. They're not as fun for me to watch and they're not as fun for me to do."

Lytle holds the UFC record for the most fight-night bonuses with seven, and with his mentality, it's easy to see why.

"I would rather come out and lose the best fight of my life in a split decision than win the worst fight of my life. I'd rather have the best fight of my life, and lose it,"

Since that fight with Serra, Lytle has fought 11 times. He is on a three-fight win streak, with his last win coming via armbar over Matt Brown at UFC 116. Though a win could help elevate him in the the welterweight division, he's only focused on Saturday night.

"I definitely feel like this is the biggest fight of my life, but all of them are," Lytle said with a smile.

Pettis already has one of MMA's more interesting backstories, and the bout with Castillo was pivotal for his career. He knocked out Castillo, then beat Alex Karalexis and Shane Roller to earn a title shot. That fight with Ben Henderson is rumored to take place in December.

Tune into "World of Jenks" on MTV on Monday at 10 p.m. ET.

Tavares wins quickly, Lowe wins decision at UFC 119

INDIANA -- Thiago Tavares made a statement in the UFC's lightweight division with a fast submission of Pat Audinwood at UFC 119.

Tavares controlled the whole bout, slamming Audinwood down to the ground. As they stood back up, Tavares locked Audinwood in a standing guillotine, causing Audinwood to tap at 3:47.

Lowe wrestles way to decision

Waylon Lowe won a bloody decision over Steve Lopez, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.

Lowe's wrestling was impressive in the first round, as he managed to control Lopez throughout the round. He sealed the round with a takedown in the final seconds.

Near the end of the second round, Lowe able to get the takedown. Lopez punished him for it, landing several punches from his back. Lowe answered by landing knees in Lopez's side, controlling action through the end of the round.

Lowe earned a takedown early in the third and final round and threw a nasty elbow, opening a large cut on Lopez's forehead. As blood poured onto the canvas, Lowe controlled the action. With just 34 seconds left in the bout, referee Herb Dean allowed for Lopez's eye to be checked by ringside doctors. The doctors let the fight continue for a decision.

DREAM 16 results: Will UFC 119 top Japanese event?

UFC 119 shapes up to be a good one tonight. The card isn't filled with superstars but it appears to possess some nice matchmaking by Joe Silva. It'll have to deliver on a high level to match last night's MMA event in Japan. DREAM 16 had plenty of pomp and circumstance and some nasty finishes.

The card was highlighted by Jason Miller's easy win over Kazushi Sakuraba. The 41-year-old legend was overmatched from the get-go. Overpowered early in the striking game, Sakuraba (26-14-2) ended up on the mat when he attempted a takedown (5:12 mark). Sakuraba posed a short threat trying to work a submission on a Miller leg but the American flattened him out and eventually pushed him to his back. That's where Miller landed two of the cleanest punches to the face you'll ever see. The stunned Sakuraba was an easy mark for an arm-triangle choke. Miller slapped it on and Sakuraba tapped quickly at 2:09 of the first. Having beaten one of his idols, Miller was emotional in the ring. HDNet analyst Frank Trigg wasn't caught up by the moment. He suggested that Sakuraba had no business being in there with a 29-year-old who's in the top 15 at middleweight and that the veteran needs to think about walking away from the ring with his health intact.

Shinya Aoki wasn't spectacular but he did control Marcus Aurelio for 15 minutes on the ground. He couldn't finish the fight but the ease with which he locked up Aurelio, a good Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, was impressive. The 27-year-old Aoki got win No. 25 of his career via unanimous decision.

Before the fight card, there were rumors of a big Aoki announcement. Turns out it had nothing to with his work in the ring but everything to do with some work on the homefront. During the opening montage video, Aoki announced that his wife is pregnant. There are still persistent rumors that Aoki will face either Gilbert Melendez or Nick Diaz around New Year's in Japan. Aoki was wearing a "Diaz t-shirt" before and after his fight.

Gegard Mousasi was impressive in the main event but his competition was less than stellar. Tatsuya Mizuno was thrown to the mat like a ragdoll and then got dominated badly. After getting beat upon for three minutes in the first, Mizuno finally gave his back and tapped on a choke that had only been on for about 1.5 seconds. With the win at 6:10 of the first, the 25-year-old Mousasi is now 30-3-1 and has to be looking for a rematch against Muhammed Lawal. Mousasi showed awful takedown defense in losing the first fight back in April.

Satoshi Ishii (2-1) got his second win but the fight was a mixed bag. He can grapple and certainly understands controlling an opponent on the ground but he didn't do a whole lot of damage while riding the much smaller Ikuhisa Minowa (46-31-8). He weighed 235 for this fight but after watching him do minimal damage it's hard to see Ishii surviving as a top level heavyweight down the road.

The most impressive wins of the night came from Michihiro Omigawa, Joachim Hansen and Hiroyuki Takaya.

Omigawa ran roughshod over Cole Escovedo. The American came out with the some hard kicks but was taken down easily and then reversed. But Escovedo got sloppy on top and left his right arm exposed. Omigawa (12-8-1) pulled off a nifty inverted armbar and appeared to have damaged Escovedo's elbow before he submitted.

Hansen was in a must-win situation. Hideo Tokoro, just four wins above .500 in 49 fights was made to order. The Norwegian scored a takedown and fell into mount. He eventually stood above Tokoro and tried to rain down some shots. In a second mount situation Hansen was so far up Tokoro's body that he was able to easily latch on a top-side triangle. Seconds later, he dropped to his side. Tokoro lifted Hansen off the mat and tried to slam his way out of the hold but it only made it tighter (pictured above). The Japanese veteran had to tap at 2:48 of round 1. Hansen (20-10-1) gets his first win since July of 2008.

Chase Beebe was once the WEC bantamweight champ but that was a different era. The world has caught and passed the Iowan. With a wrestling background, his stand-up game hasn't caught up, especially on the defensive side. Takaya (pictured on left punching) came straight forward and threw with reckless abandon. Beebe's night closed quickly when a left hook dropped him and Takaya got off six more punches on the ground to post the win at 1:45 of the first.

Including his WEC title fight loss to Miguel Torres, Beebe is just 2-6 in 2008-10.

There was also "controversy" before the fight card. The HDNet announce team of Trigg and Michael Schiavello got a little physical while donning Lucha Libre-style masks. "The Voice" grabbed Trigg's hanky and all hell broke loose (video)

Fight stats don't back up Sherk's win over Dunham

It's not easy being a judge. The action in the Octagon is fast and furious, clear views of the action are sometimes blocked and there are plenty elements to block out, like the roar of 15,000-plus fans. So not every close decision is a controversial one but the split victory given to Sean Sherk over Evan Dunham appears to be a little shaky.

At first glance, it looked like Sherk took the first on the benefit of several takedown and busting open a big cut over Dunham's eye. In rounds two and three, Sherk couldn't score his takedowns and got busted up on the feet by Dunham. Yet Glenn Trowbridge and Cecil Peoples helped Sherk to a split decision win by each giving him the nod 29-28. The fans didn't like the call and UFC president Dana White was livid with the decision.

The judges also don't have the benefit of statistics during the fight. The postfight report released by FightMetric paints a pretty one-sided picture. Sherk, a wrestler by nature, only made good on 5-of-18 takedown attempts. He also improved position, to half-guard, just once. While attempting the takedowns or trying to improve position he also got caught in seven submission attempts. The stats were even worse when the fight was standing. Dunham was incredibly active attempting nearly 200 strikes. He landed an amazing 62 percent of his jabs, 93-of-148 in all.
